48 hours in Leeuwarden

Now that you're here, let Leeuwarden take care of the rest. From its historic streets to its warm Frisian hospitality, the city invites you to slow down and enjoy. This guide gently points the way to the moments worth savouring.

Day 1

Good morning! After a good night at Notiz Hotel, treat yourself to breakfast at Restaurant Wannee before wandering into the city centre, where Leeuwarden's charm slowly unfolds.

Make the Prinsentuin your first stop of the day: a gentle garden along the old city walls, perfect for a slow morning wander. The path leads almost naturally to the Oldehove - and as the tower comes into view, don't forget to glance at the building beside it, where miniature people climb the façade. Look closely.

By now you've earned a pause. STEK is the place: relaxed, green, and easygoing - perfect for a long lunch or just something cold in hand. From there, choose your own afternoon. Culture or shopping, there's no wrong answer in Leeuwarden. Lose yourself in one of the city's museums, ceramics at the Princessehof, stories of the city at the Historisch Centrum/ Grutterswinkel, or wonders of nature at the Natuurmuseum. Or simply follow the shop windows through the centre.

For dinner, the choice is yours: back to the familiar warmth of Restaurant Wannee*, or a table along the canal, where the evening light dances on the water. Then it's just a few steps to a comfortable night's sleep at Notiz Hotel.

*Restaurant Wannee is closed for dinner from the 12th of July until the 16th of August.

Day 2

Well rested? Good - today deserves your full attention.

Start your second day at the Blokhuispoort: once a prison, now one of the city's most characterful places, home to makers, bookshops, and a creative buzz. From there, it's a short walk to the Fries Museum, where Friesland's past and present meet - from Mata Hari to modern art.

Lunch at Roast recharges you for the afternoon's highlight: a boat tour with Bootverhuur Bonkevaart. Leeuwarden is at its loveliest from the water.

On the way back, treat yourself to one last dinner - but don't rush it. Begin with a glass at Vino & Verde, where the evening gets a proper opening.

This is where our guide ends and if you wander a little further, Leeuwarden always has one more street, one more story, one more surprise.
